F.R.I.E.N.D.S. was established in 1987 as a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. We are Broward County Florida's oldest and largest horse rescue and only sanctuary. For the last thirty plus years we have averaged right around 50 horses at any given time. We currently have 45 horses, 2 miniature donkeys and 1 hinny. We also have 2 sheep, 3 goats and 2 farm pigs. We use volunteer support to help care for the animals while offering the community a hands on learning experience. People are always excited and eager to learn more about horses. While volunteering they will learn the various challenges of horse ownership, the cost, the time required, the hard work it takes to maintain them and all the other responsibilities that go with ownership. We have people of all ages that like to help and interact with all of the animals. We give them the knowledge they need, and a hands on experience. If they are looking to get their own horse at some point, this is a great way to start. We believe our programs will help people make a educated decision about what is best for them and their families. We have classes for children ages 6 to 10 years old. Most kids get intimidated by large horses so we use our Miniature Horses for these classes. The participants have no fear because they are comfortable with their size. We also except volunteers from schools, work places and individuals. There are many people that find sponsoring a horse is what they want and they stay with us for many years. Others will spread their wings and go take riding lessons, go on trail riding or go on to show horses. We welcome and encourage everyone to come out to see the place, meet the horses and other farm animals and see if you'd like to volunteer.
